US President-elect Donald Trump holds the unique distinction of reaching the Oval Office by defeating women rivals—Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Kamala Harris in 2024—who came closer to the White House than any other women in US history. Despite Trump's controversial defeat in 2020, his presidency underscores a complex dynamic: Americans seem more comfortable choosing a man over a woman for the nation's highest office, reflecting deep-rooted misogyny in parts of American society.

While Trump faces court cases that could affect his political future unless halted by legal decisions, he is set to assume the presidency on January 20. His presidency is likely to continue challenging norms and traditions, including the electoral process, which remains tied to outdated conventions.

Regarding US-India relations, while Kamala Harris's Indian background might have been seen as a bridge for stronger ties, her tenure as Vice President showed little focus on improving bilateral relations. In contrast, Trump’s first term was marked by notable initiatives like the "Howdy Modi" and "Namaste Trump" events, which strengthened ties between the two countries. Indian-Americans, many of whom were traditionally Democratic voters, have shown increasing support for Trump, especially due to his positive stance on India and its issues.

Looking ahead, a second Trump presidency may be beneficial for India, particularly in areas like the Khalistani issue and human rights concerns involving Indian officials. However, Trump’s hardline stances on immigration and trade could pose challenges, potentially limiting American investment in India and affecting trade relations.
